RICK GRIFFIN

When Rick Griffin was killed in a motorcycle accident in 1991, the poster world lost one of its most gifted apostles. Griffin's surreal imagery, his spidery, liquid lettering and rich application of color brought the medium to new heights.

Beginning his artistic career as a cartoonist and staff artist for Surfer Magazine, Griffin was acutely aware of the energy gathering in San Francisco and by mid 1966, he decided to make his way there to participate in the cultural and graphic renaissance taking place.

Griffin took his early artistic influence from American advertising and the surface elements of the counterculture - primarily music and dope ñ which he often illustrated in the form of puns. He produced eight posters for the Fillmore Auditorium from his image bank comprised of a variety of symbolic emblems including flaming eyeballs, Indian braves, bleeding hearts, scarabs and skulls.

While Griffin's gift was innate, what appeared in finished works, as flawless technique didn't come easily. He was a tortured perfectionist, applying dozens of overlays and redrawing lettering again and again until he was finally satisfied.
